Surrender, Yes, Praise
January 4, 2015
Episode #422
With Martha Kilpatrick and hosted by John Enslow
(M) I’m sitting here with John and Carole. We’ve been doing podcasts on self-hatred and my whole experience of the warfare of that. And I was working with someone recently about self-hatred, and going down to the depths of it, to the ugly horror underneath it, down in the roots; and so many times in childhood. And I think I said that self-hatred tempts you to hate God. I am seeing in the Bible so clearly that there’s only one problem, and that’s hatred of God. That leads to all the other issues, and I’m just astonished how it is right there in the scripture. But anyway I was working, and we just got a glorious solution, glorious insight, and the Holy Spirit was there. Then as I was sitting there the Lord said very clearly, “The entire solution is surrender.” And I’m aware of surrender right now because I’ve had some areas; some things to surrender to and the glorious outcome of just surrender, just letting God be God, and letting Him take you where He wants you to go. It just opens the heavens. And we don’t realize how susceptible we are to resisting God, and how susceptible we are to be tempted into self-hatred. But the solution is surrender. And I’m in, reading Murray’s book on “Absolute Surrender.” I haven’t read it in years, and it’s a whole new book. He wrote a new book since he wrote the last book; it’s entirely new, and I’m so excited about it, and I think that’s why I was able to hear the entire solution to self-hatred is surrender to God, for who He made you, who He didn’t make you; where He put you, where He didn’t put you; who you are, who you aren’t; where you’ve been, your whole story. You call it “yes,” John. In your writings about resistance, you say “yes.”
(J) Yeah. On all the blogs that I discuss yes, I go into it as a surrender issue that basically you’re saying yes to whatever He says, and whatever He designs as your life, whatever He designs as your circumstances. So, yeah, I’ve really enjoyed that whole… And I got on that with E. Stanley Jones, “The Divine Yes.” And that was an amazing thing, because he just, he really goes into… What’s the scripture that he references?
(M) It’s 2nd Corinthians 1, starts in 19, starts in 18, but I’ll start in 19. “For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, was not Yes and No.” We’ve talked about this. “But in Him it always is the divine Yes. For as many are the promises of God, they find their Yes answer in Him, Christ. For this reason we also utter the Amen, (so be it) to God through Him in His person and by His agency to the glory of God.” And that, to me, that Amen is my yes to His Yes. And we have to say an Amen to His Yes. We have to say, “Yes, I receive Your promise.
(J) Well, back in the first year of podcasts, we did an amazing podcast where we were on… It’s actually one of my favorite; two of them are actually my favorite, #40 and #41. It was the first year and I was real excited about them, because we did them right on Times Square and then we went into Central Park and finished it. And we were on a trip, and we were going to Belfast, Ireland, and the circumstances of the trip were completely taken over by Delta and a bad plane. And so, you were talking to someone on our way down to the airport, and you were saying, you know, that… I was keying into three words that you were using and you were using the words, surrender and you were using the word yes, and you were using the word praise. And funny enough, not too unlike God, immediately we were tested on that exact message that you were giving that person. And I would love, I actually would love to put that podcast back up, so that people could listen to it and see the pictures and everything like that. That was a fun; that was just fun. But that’s precisely what you went into. You went into the yes. You went into the surrender, the surrendering and the yes to God, and then praise for what He has chosen.
(M) So we were tested late that night and had left in the airport our malfunctioning plane that caused us to miss the connection to Ireland. So there we were in the airport. Well, maybe you should put it up. It’d be fun to hear it again. But it’s surrender, then agreeing to it, and then praising Him for it.
(J) I think what I’ll do is after we do whatever we’re gonna do here with these podcasts, I’ll put it up as a…
(M) A plus.
(J) Yeah, as just a little archive nostalgic, because it was the first year, and it’s, you know. It’s completely different than we do it now. But it just, it was my favorite.
(M) Well, I’ll add to my surrender as the solution to self-hatred. Surrender to God as God, otherwise it’s surrender to Satan’s hatred of God. Isn’t that awesome? And his hatred of you, the believer. So it ends up as being a huge rejection of self that is a rejection of God. And then it just takes over everything and kills your whole life and being.
(J) Because it’s agreeing with Satan.
(M) Yes, exactly.
(J) You’re falling in line with his thoughts and his mind and his assessment of you, and then you’re in agreement with him rather than God.
(M) And it’s back again to you’re either listening to God or you’re listening to Satan. There’s no 3rd entity, meaning man. And it’s one voice or the other. But I want to launch off of that into something. You’re writing about sovereignty right now, John. You’ve always said people don’t really want God to be sovereign. We want Him to, we want to have a little power of our own in it, or whatever it is. We don’t, we don’t see how completely sovereign He is. But through the last year and a lot of suffering in my life that I’ve shared some of it, not all of it. What I’ve seen is He’s not nearly in charge; He is transcendent over everything. He is moving. His life is so victorious that His life moves and goes no matter what state we’re in. He is transcendent. The life of Christ is so powerful. I have to start with Romans 8 though 28, because we throw it around, and it has a condition in it.
(J) There was the word you used this morning that really kind of shocked me, and just kind of hit my spirit, just as right. You used the word transcendent, and I think that surrender is one thing, and sovereignty is another thing, but transcendence is all-inclusive. To me, that word is all-inclusive.
(M) Yeah, over, yeah; through, in, above everything.
(J) It’s like He can be sovereign over this area or this issue or this situation, but transcendent literally transcends everything.
(M) Everything. Yes. Oh, and it’s, and I don’t even know how to say it. But we often, I do this. I quote Romans 8:28, “All things work together for good…,” without 27. 27 says, “He who searches the hearts of men knows what is in the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes and pleads before God in behalf of the saints according to and in harmony with the will of God.” That is astonishing. Then it says after establishing the Holy Spirit’s intercession, “We are assured and know that God being a partner in their labor, all things work together and are fitting into a plan for good to those who,” One, “love God” and two, “are called according to His design and purpose.” And that’s what we have to surrender to. Our surrender is to love God, to be willing to be His design within His purpose. Then everything works together for good.
(J) That’s, that’s huge.
(M) You got it. Oh, it’s clear. Hallelujah.
(J) That’s huge
(M) Alright, now. I’m just, this morning I don’t have all I want to have because I want to go into the scriptures and just see where this goes. Ok, I’m going to start with Hosea 2, and I spoke about this and how the Lord had put me in a wilderness. And He said, “in the wilderness, then I will give her her vineyards from there and the Valley of Achor as a day of hope.” And the Amplified says, “She will sing and dance as in the days of her youth.” Let me tell you what the Valley of Achor is; trouble. The valley of troubles is your door of hope. Isaiah says it too. And in that place you’ll have your vineyards, your fruit, your song and your dance, because God transcends you, transcends everything through that valley, and He brings you into His transcendence. And sometimes when I’ve been in, in the Valley of Achor; that’ll just describe it, whatever trouble it is, all different kinds of troubles in my life; some health problems, some life problems. And ya’ll have said to me, you all have been astonished at the fruit. I won’t be that aware of it, but sometimes I am aware how astonishingly life takes me over and He has His purpose using me, and I’m just astonished. The living waters don’t stop flowing. His life goes through and beyond everything. Transcendent means above and beyond, and even in your Valley of Achor, He’s doing something so transcendent, that surrender to that valley causes the yes and the praise. Surrender, yes, praise applies there, because surrender brings you… It’s bowing your will. It’s over and over. I’m also reading Nee’s booklet, and I would love to make it available as my gift to anybody who wants it. I’ll have us, anybody who wants that booklet free, I will see to it that it’s sent. It’s called, “Worshipping the Ways of God” by Watchman Nee. It’s an incredible booklet. I carry it with me most everywhere, and I need it many times, because when God’s ways go quirky, and they do; unexpected, surprising, shocking. One day you can be one place, and the next day you have a whole different situation that you have no control over. And that requires surrender, a constant surrender.
I would like to request a copy of “Worshipping The Ways Of God” thank you.
I can ditto all the comments. The valley of surrender has been painful, discouraging, filled with anger, hopelessness and then I remember God is a sovereign God and I am not in charge. I don’t understand it but I stop and thank Him for the work He is doing in me. Then I listen to a message and or read a blog and am encouraged with the messages that are being shared along with everyone’s comments. He is ding a mighty work in each of us to learn what our us to surrender to Him completely. Yes thank you a copy of the booklet would be enjoyed. Love to you all.
Just yesterday I was writing about my refusal to surrender to the valley I accepted to enter in. How long will this be?. Some how I expected it to be different and a reward sometime… not pain, or lonelines, … I find this anger and can´t find the way to the knees in my heart. HELP
I would love to have a copy of Nee´s book.
Thank you Martha for the offer.
Love!
I wish we could see our surrender as our protection. We would not pass so many years fumbling and fighting against the air. But unfortunately we equalize surrender to “weak”, when “weak” really means another thing altogether.
xxx
OhI almost forgot, may I also request a copy of Watchman Nees booklet “Worshipping the Ways of God”. Thanks you.
Hi Martha, John, Carol and everyone with you at Shulamite Ministries, Happy New Year!
Thanks once again for the leading of Holy Spirit to remind me of the “Surrender, Yes and Praise God” for my life story regardless of the outward conditions. His ways are not our ways and His thoughts are not our thoughts, unless we grasp this teaching message as the Holy Spirit is leading us. Then it’s much clearer to understand Romans 8:27-28 my favorite scripture passage. Love to all, Shirley (Albuquerque, NM)
Thank you for the insights on Romans 8:27-28. I never looked at that in the right context. I am continually grateful for this ministry and I love you all. Yes, I would like to have Nee’s booklet.
What an absolute, glorious, life-giving word today! My whole life changed yesterday and I’m clueless, but yes I can surrender to the unknown because of who He is. Abba Father!
I would love to read Nee’s book also… thank you so much Martha et al.
Dear Martha, I would greatfully accept your offer because I would love to read it too, but will you be sending it anywhere?!! :)
Oh what meat what glorious treasure in this podcast. Must go and find my Absolute Surrender again. Oh thank you for the gift of “Worshipping the Ways
of GOD” Bless , bless you bless you all/
This was packed! The Valley of troubles being our door of hope . . . major crisis in our family right now that has brought out, in me, discouragement, anger, etc. Starting now, I’m going to be anticipating and praising God for His transcendence over this situation.
Also, I’m one who throws that scripture around (Rom.8:28) — thank you, Martha, for the big picture!
Then surrender, which kind of merges into everything else that was discussed — I’ve tried 3 times to get to the end of Murray’s book: misplaced – reordered; found it afterwards (my husband had it). The other two times, replaced by another book that came along that was really good (and not as challenging). So, thank you for the offer, Martha, but please do NOT send “Worshipping The Ways of God.” I’ll pick it up after I get through “Absolute Surrender.”
Love
Murray’s “Absolute surrender” has been a constant companion for many many years .
There were times when the killing of me was just too hard , and I would put it away a bit.
But even through these times, when I prayed in the Spirit, I would hear the word; “surrender” over and over again. Patiently, gentle Holy Spirit just keeps on helping me.
I can not believe the ends our God will go to, to help us. I can not comprehend such goodness.
I believe that we enter deeper into His rest after every battle to surrender.
Me too Annalie, I am going to pull my old, dog-eared copy from the shelf and read it again. I would be grateful to receive a copy of Nee’s booklet “Worshipping The Ways of God.” Thank you.
Hi You Guys!
I would love to have a copy of Nee’s book “Worshipping the Ways of God”.
Thank you,
Love!
